St Wolfgang Austria
Here is a little trip in your life’s journey that will thrill you with joy. After leaving the wharf at St Gilgen, the ferry winds its way around the hillside, clusters of homes, retreats, hotels etc and after about 20 minutes arrives in St Wolfgang.
It is just exciting to meander through this pretty village with its true Austrian heritage. Balconies with their beautiful flower boxes, the outside walls of the buildings all so artistically painted. Horse drawn carriages available for a ride. The shops although typically for tourists are just great to browse in and often just can’t resist taking home a little of St Wolfgang.
The very old church beckons you, although “No Photos” signs are up. Just to see the age of this place and to think villagers have been worshipping here for hundreds of years and still do, is thrilling.
To the side of the church is a great place to take photos of the lake as it is elevated. There are arches along the waterfront which frame the photos of the lake. You can go wandering along the water either side of the village and enjoy the flowers and passing parades. You can’t visit our special place “St Wolfgang” without a visit on the rack railway up to the top of Schafberg mountain behind St Wolfgang.
What fun finding your seat on this unusual little train with the cho-cho engine (as I called them when I was little). This historic train brings such gorgeous scenery of the lake and villages below. Plus, the mountains of sheer beauty roll off one onto another. At last you reach the peak and then it’s quite a short sharp final step to the top.
St Wolfgang A Must
You can spend a couple of hours enjoying a snack, soaking in the magnificent hills of the “sound of Music” on Schafberg.
A must is to remember to book your return trip down the mountain when you first arrive at the top. We forgot last time and had a few hours wait for the trip down. Next time our final village around Wolfgangsee is Strobl.
